A Computer room is essentially the central and protected space, which includes one or more building distributors (RACKS). The distributor is the link between the vertical and the horizontal network. The core of a network’s infrastructure, the distributor, guarantees the efficient and durable installation. The Computer Room is the starting point of an installation and is necessary to create an environment suitable for the neuralgic center of the network. This protected area, in addition to the passive equipment, also contains the active one.

The design of a Computer Room should be based on the following parameters:

  • Depending on the surface covered,

  • Depending on the users’ needs

  • Depending on the required equipment,

  • Depending on the future needs of the users and the required reserves

  • Depending on the needs of the installation and maintenance manager (IT Manager),

  • Depending on the size of the racks, electrical panels and more.

Required knowledge about installing a Computer Room – Data Center

Determining the space inside the building

The Computer Room should be located in the center of the building to serve the needs of proper data distribution. It should also be easy to access through a shared area, such as a corridor. The individual Computer Rooms, which will be located on different floors, will have to be designed and placed perpendicular to each other and all together in conjunction with the location of the central Computer Room. This is done to reduce the length of the cables in the vertical network and to ensure guaranteed performance of each system.

In the Computer Room, a special workplace for employees who will deal with its planning and maintenance must be considered

For the security of the company and especially for access to the Computer Room, the installation of a Access Control System is recommended.

Finally, the installation of a false floor and a false ceiling in the area where the Computer Room will be installed, is foreseen.

Backup planning

In order to have an efficient long-term installation, of a Computer Room, a backup must be possible. A 30-50% backup is recommended in racks and should be considered when installing the Computer Room so that it can accept an additional distributor.

Provision of necessary space around the distributors and tables

It is necessary that a suitable space around the boards and distributors could be provided in order to ease their installation, the capability of installing the necessary equipment and its cables crossing, as well as for the subsequent scheduled maintenance of the installation.

For electrical panels, we must calculate a free space of at least 500mm up and down and at least 600mm to the right and to the left of their installation point. For rotating racks, we must calculate a free space of at least 800mm in the direction of its rotation. For access from the front, a free space of 800 mm and above should be calculated.

For underfloor distributors (RACKS), the free space we need to calculate is 900mm in front and behind the cabinet.

On each side of each rack, or a set of racks, it is recommended to calculate a free space of about 600mm.

Precautions during installation

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMS)

Both in the Computer Room and in other zones of the installation, the network of wiring should not be located near sources of electromagnetic interference. The network wiring should be separate from the strong current wiring, within different metal grilles. Also, all distributors and metal grilles to be installed must be grounded to a separate grounding installation, from that of strong currents.

Labeling

A visible and legible labeling of patch panels and cables is necessary to ensure a long-term service life of the installation, but also the proper operation of our systems.

Arrangement of a server functions inside a Rack

Clear separation of the various functions or at least the proper labeling is recommended . We should have a label on the various cables and patch panels. In case different categories are used, there must be a clear distinction. Depending on the size of the installation, this separation can be done inside a rack or by using different racks.

Cable Crossing

The cables crossing to the distributor is done with the use of a metal grill, which has a closed type lid, and which is placed under the false floor. Above the false floor we can calculate a metal grid type grill and a plastic channel (Fiber Runer), which are placed above the racks, for the crossing of cables between the distributors.

In the arrival and departure of the cables, within the distributor, we must pay special attention to the tilt radius of the cables. When arranging the installation cables, as well as the splitting cables, inside the distributor, it is recommended not to tighten the cables too much and not to place more than 48 cables together. The wiring should be arranged on the side, on vertical bars or grills located inside the distributor. For better arrangement of the patch cords, we place wire managers between each patch panel.

Heat management

A Computer Room should maintain a constant temperature range, which guarantees the proper operation of its equipment. The range of this temperature ranges from 10 C (degrees Celsius) to 35 C (degrees Celsius), in a room without active products, and with a humidity of no more than 85%. If the room has active products, then this range should range from 18C (degrees Celsius) to 25C (degrees Celsius) and with relative humidity that should not exceed 50%. As far as distributors are concerned, there should be a system for managing their heat, especially when there are active POE products that touch large amounts of heat.

Computer Room – Data Center Specifications

A Computer Room must meet the requirements of maximum security, efficient use of resources, high availability and the ability to easily upgrade and manage its system.

At the same time, it should be able to deal with natural hazards, such as fires and situations in which its smooth operation is prevented due to external factors, such as power outages.

Collectively, a Computer Room should cover all the requirements arising from the relevant studies and will be implemented by each researcher.

In order to have a functional and even Computer Room you need the following:

  • Notification system, in case of temperature rise, beyond the permitted limits.

  • Installation of suitable and sufficient air conditioning, to ensure the maintenance of the necessary temperature in the space of a Computer Room.

  • Fire detection system for early warning, in case of fire.

  • Automatic fire extinguishing system, with a special design for predicting a reduction in the minimum damage of the equipment of the Computer Room, in case of its activation.

  • Additional fire extinguishing measures with the installation of portable fire extinguishers, in immediately accessible points.

  • Proper connection of the UPS, for the correct normalization of the voltage and the safe closing of the devices, which will protect the whole, the proposed equipment of a Computer Room.

  • Installation of structured Wiring and Electrical Wiring.

  • Installation of false floor & false ceiling, to hide the cables.

The construction materials of a Computer Room should be fireproof, with a high degree of fire resistance. It is also necessary to place exit signs, panic bars on the exit doors and safety lights.

  • The temperature sensor,

  • The relative humidity sensor,

  • The leak detector,

  • The ability to report a period of pilot operation able(errors, events and corrective actions),
